March of the Giants in Douai (Fête de Gayant)

The history of the Giants dates back to 16th century. Every year in July the enormous parade passes through the streets of a medieval town of Douai. Thousands of tourists can admire 5 grand effigies carried by a specific number of their porters. The father, Monsieur Gayant, measure almost 28ft (8,5m) and weigh 370kg, his wife is a somewhat smaller and measure a little over 20ft (6,25m). The couple has three children: Binbin, Jacquot and Fillon. Whole family not only passes across the town but also dances all along the carnival. If you are interested you can visit their house...yes! they have their own house. Artists throwing the strips of paper into the public, singers walking on stilts and a carriage of Sun King (Louis XIV), it's just a small part of what you can see. For the amateurs of organ music you'll be pleased. There's a concert carillon of Douali's belfry. It's possible to hear it just once a year during this event. It's a great time to blow off steam and move back in time.. What's more the North Sea is the hour away from Douai. You can visit the northern region of France called: Picardie. I was there this year and you?
